Tiny house : Transform your dream into reality step by step

Your main focus is on the essentials and spending more quality time with your family and strive to live an eco-responsible lifestyle?

A tiny house might just be the home for you! It’s a household with less than 500 square feet known for its optimized storage space and its low ecological footprint. Let’s find out how to switch a minimalist lifestyle with the trendy tiny house that has people talking.

Choose your tiny house and which foundation

On wheels: The tiny house on wheels, commonly called a trailer, offers great mobility and can be moved wherever you wish!  A caravan is also considered a tiny house on wheels, if its owners live there full time.

On screw piles: By choosing a tiny house on screw piles, you’re opting for strength and durability.  Since the piles are screwed below the freeze level, they provide great stability.  In addition, a tiny house on piles can also be moved (it’s an arduous process, but doable!)

On a concrete foundation: this is a more traditional type of foundation, which does not allow you to option of moving your tiny house.  It will be extremely well supported, but more costly.

Inquire on your municipal bylaws

Before embarking on a tiny house construction, there are a few guidelines you must follow.  Did you know that it is prohibited to build them in many areas?  The simpliest and easiest way to find out if you can own a tiny house in your desired area would be to call your city for information.  Here a some municipalities that have designed neighborhoods for tiny houses :  Sainte-Brigitte-de-Laval, Dixiville, Saint-André Avelin, Papineauville, Sainte-Marguerite-du-Lac-Masson, Chertsey, Saint Côme, Farnham, Knowlton, Granby, Shawinigan, Saint-Etienne-de-Bolton and Témiscouata-sur-le-Lac.

Prefabricated or build ?

Choosing to buy and have delivered your prefabricated tiny house does have it’s advantages : No need to build; you can move in immediately;  no purchasing building materials that have sky-rocketed in prices; everything is already thought out and optimized, etc.

However, building your own tiny house has it’s advantages : you can choose the material and siding yourself; you can add your own personal touches and the savings are often significant, since you’re not paying any or less labor.

Landscaping

Since indoor living space is limited in a tiny house, it’s important to have a pleasant outdoor environment, as you’ll probably be spending more time outside.  Having a tiny house does not equate tiny yard or tiny balcony!    You can allow yourself to landscape your yard and maximize your outdoor living space. For example, if you want to host an evening with several of your friends and family, you’ll probably opt for an outdoor dinner or relax by an outdoor fire grilling smores.  Therefore, it would be a good idea to install a charming patio with a few chairs, an area to create a firepit and maybe even a picnic table in your yard.  If you choose a tiny house on wheels, it would be wise to buy items that are easy to fold up (chairs, tables, etc.) so they can travel well from one destination to another.
